While major automotive companies are waiting for the release of Development Plan for the New Energy Automobile Industry, the business opportunities of new energy vehicles have already arrived. Since the upcoming Shanghai World Expo stimulates the market, the demands for new energy automobile have jumped, according to the Cnstock.com.

The designated suppliers for Shanghai World Expo have already obtained the benefits. Hu Gang, the Deputy General Manager of Xinri Electric Cars told Cnstock.com that “he had never expected that Xinri got another eight orders for electric cars prior to Shanghai World Expo. Bank of Communications ordered two electric armored cars and Hongqiao Airport ordered six 8-seater electric cars. Hu Gang said," Xinri Electric Cars will deliver more than 100 four-wheel electric vehicles to Shanghai Expo as well as over 300 two-wheel electric cars. The added mileage is up to 100 kilometers after a vehicle gets charged. When foreign tourists sit or just have a look at the electric vehicles in the Expo area, they will get more notions about the products of Xinri and buy the electric vehicles. Therefore we believe that business opportunities will emerge after Shanghai World Expo." The dealerships of Xinri who have already received orders pointed out that Shanghai Expo would bring new business opportunities worthy of 200,000 units of electric vehicles (excluding the cars provided for Shanghai Expo). As the average price of Xinri electric vehicle is 2000 yuan per unit, the sales will grow by at least 400 million yuan.

Since Shanghai World Expo is coming soon, automobile manufacturers are also eager to get a share in the market. Mr. Gan Pin, the General Manager of New Energy Vehicles Department of Shanghai Automotive Group, said that SAIC would provide 1000 new energy vehicles for Shanghai Expo, including four major categories-electric vehicles, super capacitors vehicles, fuel cell vehicles and hybrid vehicles. Roewe 750 is a lithium new energy model which is developed by SAIC and the maximum speed is able to reach 150 km/h. The maximum driving range is up to 250 kilometers and the fastest charging time is half an hour. It is reported that several vehicles will be operating in other places in Shanghai after the Expo, which will play a virtually publicity role of promoting SAIC's new energy models.

Nowadays automakers are still exploring the future of new energy vehicles. In SAIC-General Motors Museum in Shanghai Expo, GM's double-seater EN-V electric-networking concept car will become the focus. The car is a small-sized model and is able to get charged automatically. The weight of the vehicle is just over 400 kg and is much lighter compared with the average weight of traditional vehicle-1500 kg. As to parking, the car only needs an area of over ten square meters. For the parking space of a traditional vehicle, we can park five units of EN-V. Amazingly, relying on lithium power, EN-V can automatically search for power network and conduct self-charging. EN-V is able to cover 40 kilometers after it is fully charged.

Automotive industry expects that Shanghai World Expo will promote the development of new energy vehicles. In accordance with the relevant planning of Shanghai, the production of new energy vehicles will account for 10% in the city's vehicles output by the year of 2012. SAIC executives said that the company had already devised full layout of new energy automotive industry chain. Once the market is opened, SAIC will quickly introduce new energy models which are most suitable for the market.

As to the future development of new energy vehicles and electric vehicles, major automakers have different plans. However, they have already reached a consensus that with the introduction of government subsidies, the new energy auto market in China and across the globe will become an attractive cake. Lei Zhiyuan, the Director of Sales, Marketing, and Planning of Mercedes - Benz (China) said, “Studies show that in the year of 2020 electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles will reach the peak. At that time, hybrid vehicles may account for 20% in the global market and electric vehicles may get 5% share in the market. “General Motors is betting on the year of 2030. GM pointed out that “by 2030, more than 80% of eight billion people across the world will live in cities and at that time intelligent new energy vehicles will play a significant role."(Translator: Qinghua/Hanxin)
