Editor's Notes: On June 1 China issued The Notice on Pilot Subsidies for Private Purchase of New Energy Vehicles which indicates that consumers will obtain up to 50,000 yuan when buying plug-in hybrid passenger vehicles. For a consumer who buys a pure electric car, he or she can get as much as 60,000 yuan as subsidy. As to those energy-efficient cars, the one-time fixed subsidy standard is 3,000 yuan.
Chinese government offers different amount of subsidies in accordance with different kinds of new energy cars. Insiders in automotive industry believed the new policy indicates that China will explicitly set pure electric vehicles as the main direction of new energy vehicle industry in the future.
Some automakers have taken actions in the field of new energy vehicles. So what effects will the new policy exert? How will automakers respond to the policy? Auto.sohu.com had an interview with Yang Xueliang, the Director of Public Relations of Geely Automobile Holdings Group.
Sohu Auto: Based on the different amount of subsidies, some insiders in automotive industry pointed out that Chinese government preferred electric vehicles as to the choice of new technology. What do you think about?
Yang Xueliang: Geely has known that the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and National Development and Reform Commission have jointly issued The Notice on Pilot Subsidies for Private Purchase of New Energy Vehicles and another new policy. Our government has taken measures to promote the application of new energy and energy-efficient vehicles. Geely is happy to see that. In order to establish a saving society, it is of great importance to guide consumers to choose energy-efficient and new energy vehicles. Geely will fully support the policy and enhance developing related products based on the direction set by Chinese government.
Sohu Auto: Will Geely reinforce the development of new energy vehicles?
Yang Xueliang: In recent years regarding energy-efficient and new energy vehicles, Geely has devised detailed development strategy of products. The overall direction is to adhere to the tradition and focus on the future. The development strategy is diverse. In these fields, our preparations are in accordance with the national planning.
On the one hand, Geely attaches great importance to the improvement and upgrading of traditional engines and transmission technologies. In addition to developing CVVT independently, Geely has also carried out other programs including the development of advanced gasoline engines, highly efficient diesel engines, transforming traditional engines into VVT ones and efficient transmission system and so on. Geely wants to achieve the goal of saving energy by developing advanced technologies.
On that basis, Geely began the research of new energy technologies, aiming at the industrialization of new energy vehicles. Geely started in-depth work on micro hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles and pure electric vehicles and emphasized the fundamental research to lay a solid foundation. At the same time, Geely began to develop new energy products after mastering core technologies.
After long-term preparations, Geely is capable of producing and introducing the models which fit in the standards set by Chinese government. Those models have been shown to the public in the 2010 Beijing Auto Show. As to saving-energy models with smaller engines, Geely has already had Geely Panda and other models which meet the fuel-consumption requirements that are going to take effect from the year of 2012. In terms of new energy, Geely has completed the development of low-cost lead-acid battery electric vehicles and high-performance lithium-ion electric cars and a plug-in hybrid vehicle. After obtaining the approval from national authorities, Geely will introduce those models to markets according to the government's plan.
As the same time, we are also pleased to see that Chinese government has set Shanghai, Changchun, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Hefei as the pilot cities of private purchase of new energy vehicles. The government's plan is suitable for Geely's market layout. Geely will run pilot projects in those markets and provide good after-sale service for customers so than everyone can enjoy driving a Geely new energy vehicle. (Translator: Qinghua/Hanxin)
