Editor’s Notes: On December 12, 50 Elites of China Automobile Forum was established in Beijing. Initiated by Sohu Auto, the forum consists of top experts in China's auto industry, leaders of industry bodies and heads of automobile manufacturers. Currently the forum has 40 members, all of whom play an important role in China's automotive industry. 26 members were present at the founding ceremony.
50 Elites of China Automobile Forum aims at building a communication platform for high-end members in automotive industry. Through the ongoing communication, the forum can provide the most valuable recommendations for managers, and offer advice and theoretical guidance for China's industry from a strategic point of view. Therefore the forum will enhance the comprehensive development of China's automotive industry, propelling China to become a real giant in terms of production and sales of vehicles. The following is the phase of a seminar whose topic is national strategy of electric vehicles’ development.
He Yi: Thank you, Zhao Pu. It’s my honor to host this forum, and actually I know that opinion leaders here are better qualified than me. The organizer, however, asked me to be the moderator so I am honored.
Now let us welcome a few forum guests, including BYD Company Limited chairman of the board and president Mr. Wang Chuanfu, president of the World Electric Vehicle Association, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, academician of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering Mr. Chen Qingquan, dean of School of Automotive Engineering of Jilin University and director of State Key Laboratory of Automobile Dynamic Simulation Mr. Guan Xin, as well as Xu Xiangyang, deputy dean of School of the Traffic Science and Engineering of Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics.
Faced with outstanding people such as Wang Chuanfu, I think I can’t ask him some questions. I hope that we can give him a full time to explain his electric vehicles’ development strategy. As far as I am concerned, the media sector is clear Mr. Wang hasn’t spoken to so many media and hasn’t elaborated on his strategy or ideas. Ok, applaud for him.
Wang: I am very happy today, and thanks for this opportunity provided by Sohu Auto. I will simply talk about electric vehicles’ development strategy of BYD in the coming years so that for you to consider.
BYD is developing battery and automotive, which is a very special way. After several years of development, sales of Chinese car market have reached 18 million units now. Maybe automotive family was a dream ten years ago, but now we have realized that dream. Everyone has a car will not be a dream, which I think can be achieved in the next 20 or 30 years.
Behind these words, it is necessary for us to consider that China has 400 million households, and if a family has a car, there will be 400 million units. A car is expected to consume lots of oil a year, and how can China solve the fuel crisis with so many cars? It is urgent for China to develop electric vehicles, for it can matter national security. As for the issue of reducing carbon dioxide emissions, it is a problem should be dealt with at the same time. This is the first point of view I want to emphasize.
The second point of view, we actually have a lot of misunderstanding of the electric vehicles. It is very difficult for us to develop electric vehicles because of several barricades. The first is battery technology. If we can grasp high-level battery technology, other challenges can be overcome easily. As a matter of fact, the structure of electric vehicles is very simple. The second is energy-saving, including resources and energy. The third is environmental protection. In other words, electric vehicles should be simple, economical and environmental friendly. Maybe there are misunderstandings on electric vehicles, but electric vehicles actually will be more reliable, simple and environmental friendly after popularity.
Speaking of the vehicle development routes, I think they have to be based on different markets. In terms of preference, we should first develop buses. Currently, the number of China’s buses and taxies is 11.7 million units. The buses consume lots of oil, accounting for 25 percent of the total oil consumption.
