Sohu Auto: Do you think now is the best opportunity for Dongfeng Renault?
Jacques DANIEL: This question has been bothering almost everyone, except for me. The Dongfeng-Renault joint venture is the last step in multinational automakers’ attempt to map out their development plans in China. Once it is completed, the dust will settle. With the alliance, we can set one foot in first and then the other, or we can jump in with both feet; each has its own merits. But you know, actually, you can’t jump too far with both feet. It might be faster to make one big stride with one foot and have the other follow.
Sohu Auto: Dongfeng- Renault- Nissan are called a “golden triangle”. How will Dongfeng Renault and Dongfeng Nissan further their cooperation and strengthen the “golden triangle”?
Jacques DANIEL: Dongfeng Nissan, a China-Japanese joint venture, has already achieved mass production in China. But Donfeng Renault hasn’t start production yet. It’s natural that we have different ideas and standpoints. We’ll cooperate with Dongfeng Nissan in power assembly and supply chains, with a lot of potential waiting to be tapped. But before that happens, we need to build our factory and start producing.
Sohu Auto: What do you think are the advantages of combining the sales of imported and domestic models?
Jacques DANIEL: Renault will have one uniform image in China. There is only on Renault.
Secondly, it is more consumer-friendly. Consumers will get to try the complete range of Renault’s products in one shop.
Thirdly, Renault would have to go through a very difficult process to build an independent marketing system, starting from scratch, because we would need to recruit dealers who then need to build shops and wait for products to arrive. We want to avoid that.
Sohu Auto: Is there a specific timetable for Dongfeng Renault’s first foray into the sedan market in the future?
Jacques DANIEL: We need to focus on making good SUV products first, bringing good experience to clients with 2 new models while earning decent profits. On top of that, we can enter the next market. And we have prepared some products already.
To me personally, it would be best to do things under a bigger framework. But first, we should make these 2 new models a solid success in the market.
Sohu Auto: The new model Dongfeng Renault is planning to release in 2016, many people are guessing it would be an SUV Koleo. The market is changing fast. Are you concerned that there might be some new changes in the market in 2016?
Jacques DANIEL: The first model we release is definitely not a Koleo, but a brand new product. Renault has launched 6 models of concept vehicles, corresponding to the 6 stages in the cycle of life. 2 of them are already on the market. One is about to. The domestic model would be one of the other three.
Sohu Auto: Your factory’s planned production capacity is 150,000 units of whole vehicles. Is that enough for you?
Jacques DANIEL: Why is the production capacity only 150,000 units? Because the government only approved that much. So it is about policy restrictions. Renault has a global market share of 3%. If we multiply it by China’s market size, it’s clear that 150,000 units is far from enough. But anyhow, we need to make a start first.
Sohu Auto: After taking the post at Renault, have you considered what height you would like the company to reach within your term?
Jacques DANIEL: The mother companies on both sides have made very ambitious plans for us. My job is to turn into reality the expectations and ambitions that shareholders on both sides have and which they convey to us through the Board.
First goal, build the factory; Second goal, produce high-quality products; Third goal, sell imported cars from French Renault.
