In 2009, China's own auto brands took off. In this year, own auto brands Chery and Geely whose business has been conducted for ten years all made a virtual success. Additionally, China’s three state-owned assets auto giants have also started the process of independent research and development: SAIC invested a lot of money into Roewe and MG, FAW continued to implement the refinement of Bestrunyq products, Dongfeng also created its first passenger car brand, which realized its 40 years of dreams since found.   First: Geely’s acquisition of Volvo

December 24, 2009, Mr. Li Shufu got an important turning point in his life because on that day he made it clear that Geely had reached agreement on all important commercial terms of acquiring Volvo with Ford, which also meant that Geely’s complete acquisition of Volvo's was only a matter of time.   Second: BAIC’s acquisition of Saab

December 14, 2009, BAIC announced it successfully acquired three entire vehicle platforms of Saab 9-5, 9-3, two series of turbo-charged engine, ownership of gearbox technology and some production models. This helped BAIC get extremely important raw data and accumulation of materials for independent auto brands research and development, which also provided realistic models for BAIC’s high-level research and development of independent auto brands.

  Third: Southeast Motor got out of plight because of V3

Listing of V3 somewhat a surprise, however, if we think rationally it was also inevitable. Southeast Motor has the best-selling Lancer product platform of Mitsubishi but it couldn’t produce best-selling products. Forced by the cruel reality Southeast Motor launched independent auto brand V3. V3’s appearance slightly changed while the use of transmission becomes more mature. Its displacement is 1.5-liters which makes its price greatly reduced. Thanks to Lancer’s chassis foundation, V3 could supply superior driving pleasure for car owners. Moreover, it ranked the best-selling models in 2009. Best sales performance of V3 helped Southeast Motor got out of plight and has the capital to discuss acquisition price with Guangzhou Automobile and Beijing Automotive.

  Fourth: SAIC straightened out the relationship between the MG and Roewe

December 22, 2009, MG6 made by SAIC began to be sold in the market after SAIC acquired NAC. SAIC has also abandoned the previous Chinese name MG created by NAC for the MG and brand slogan let heart beats. MG6 only has English name and it is positioned as a global car, which is the first important model for SAIC to go abroad. The Roewe is positioned as high-end auto brand in Chinese car market. SAIC is clear about the relationship between Roewe and MG, Roewe is mainly sold in China while MG6 is mainly sold in overseas countries. One is known for comfortable and luxurious and the other is known for sports and fashion.

  Fifth: Dongfeng established brand Fengshen

On July 22, 2009 Dongfeng Fengshen's first sedan brand Fengshen S30 officially listed. Listing of S30 model also meant that Dongfeng eventually could produce own auto brands passenger cars since found 40 years ago. Throughout 2009, sales of Fengshen were only 18 thousand units, which only accounted for 1% of Dongfeng series’ whole 1.8 million sales. However it took Dongfeng 40 years to succeed a small step while now it finally took the step.

  Sixth: FAW redesigned Hongqi

10 years later chairman Hu Jintao again selected Hongqi as the car for National Day military parade, which is not only a glory for FAW but also a glory for Chinese people. FAW could utilize modern manufacturing technologies to redesign a classic Hongqi flagship model based on the appearance of old model. Success of FAW let us have the confidence on Hongqi’s performance in Chinese luxury car market in the future.

  Seventh: BYD F3 finally got China's first

In mid-January 2010 in annual sales data released by China Automobile Industry Association, sales of BYD F3 finally won the sales champion title, and this was the first time China’s own auto brands won the title. That is not just a proud for BYD but also reflects China’s own auto brands cars will become the mainstream in the future Chinese car market.

  Eighth: Changan finally acquired Changhe, Hafei and become mini cars king in China

November 10 2009, Changan eventually acquired Changhe and Hafei. After the sale of automotive assets, China Aviation Industry Group could more focus on implement large aircraft project, while after the acquisition of Hafei and Changhe, Changan is more inclined to become mini cars king in China and compete with Wuling which has only one brand.

  Ninth: Chery officially began divided auto brands operations

In the early of this year ten-year-old Chery released four brands synchronous operation product strategy. These four brands are respectively Chery, RIICH, RELY and Karry. Each auto brand began to operate independently, and there is a full range of product layout, which helped Chery enter a new car R & D blowout period.

  Tenth: Guangzhou Automobile will eventually acquired CFA

Prudent as Cantonese always is, on May 19 2009 Guangzhou Automotive announced its plans to acquire 29% stake in Changfeng and become the largest shareholder of Changfeng after Chinese government issued new auto industry policies. Then, Guangzhou Automobile eventually acquired SUV brand CFA. Since then, Changsha Guang Feng plant will be an important SUV product base for Guangzhou Automotive’s layout of its own auto brand products. (Translator: Qinghua Wade)
