Whether large can be seen as powerful auto

  When most of NPC deputies and CPPCC members hotly discussed China's economy, policies of real estate and people's livelihood issues in recent held Two Conferences, China's auto industry also attracted considerable attention for its role in pushing China's economy.

  Last year China successfully surpassed the United States as the largest auto production and sales country in the world. After that many Chinese believe China has become a powerful auto country.

  Nevertheless, deputies of NPC think large auto production and sales country couldn't guarantee a powerful auto country, and we must improve the quality of Made in China, strengthen the development of core technologies and built 2-3 global auto brands.

  China still has no world-famous auto brands in the world currently

  China's auto industry made a good performance under the impacts of global financial crisis in 2009, and the number of production and sales all reached more than 13 million units. As a result, China surpassed the United States as the world largest auto country and received considerable attention from various sides. At present, many people feel confused whether China is a powerful auto country or not when China has already become the largest auto countries in the world, after all, Chinese have been dreaming of a powerful country for a long time.

  “Though China became a large auto country, it is still far away from a powerful auto country”, said Wang Fengying during Two Conferences, president of Great Wall Motor Company. At the same time, Zuo Yanan, chairman of JAC believed China’s own auto brands must account for 60% of market share if China wants to be a powerful auto country. Judged through this standard China still has a long way to go ahead.

  It is reported that though China has become the largest auto production and sales country in the world currently, share of own auto brands accounts for less than half and most of the market share is dominated by joint ventures.

  “China's auto industry need to develop own auto brands and build own strong brand status in the world if China plans to be a powerful auto country”, said Wang Fengying. Development of China's own auto brands can improve the quality of development and research service, and help own auto brands establish brands advantage in the process of competing with foreign auto brands.

  

  Technologies are not necessarily back after market traded

  In addition to building China's own auto brands as soon as possible, another key measure is to strengthen the construction of core technologies related to China's auto industry. According to Zuo Yanan, the biggest advantage of China's auto industry is market, development and research ability and manufacturing level, however, are still far away from developed nations.

  China's auto industry must improve technology level so as to build world-famous auto brands. “The most important standard for a powerful auto country is to own core technologies of auto industry. Once we own core technologies and narrow the technology distinction with world-recognized powerful auto countries, we can finally become a powerful auto country”, said Fu Yuwu, relevant responsible person at China Association of Automobile manufacturers.

  Meanwhile, Miao Wei, vice minister at Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China Bureau also believed that China should meet three requirements if wants to be a powerful auto country. One of the requirements is to own core technologies and grasp the development trend of new technologies. Moreover, during this process China should cultivate self-innovation ability.

  China didn’t get expected technologies from foreigners though in the past decades our market has been traded for technologies. Otherwise, distinction between China's own auto brands and foreign brands including Benz and BMW can't be so large. Analysts think China should own core technologies first, then develop own industry with a great effort to build the first level auto brands in global car market.

  Ten years China needs to be a powerful auto country?

  A great number of people believe owning 2-3 world-famous auto brands are the basic standard for evaluating a powerful auto country. However, it will maybe take 10 years or more to build 2-3 such auto brands. Asked about the time China could be a powerful auto country, Lang Xuehong, analyst at auto industry research firm, Sinotrust, pointed out it will at least take 10 years before China's auto industry achieves remarkable development.

  “It can be long and also short. If we have good industry policies, a suitable development strategy, industrial planning, auto industry strategic match, and harmonious relationship between Chinese government, auto enterprises and the public, ten years is proper”, said Zuo Yanan.

  Certain prudent people also think after 20 years China can be a real powerful auto country. Besides, during the following years China's own auto enterprises will meet more challenges coming from competitors. How to build global auto brands which could compete with foreign brands such as Benz and BMW is uncertain. ((Translator: Qinghua Wade)
