January 23, State Council agreed to set up the China Automotive Industry Corporation, charged by machinery and electronics department. Machinery and electronics department authorized China Automotive Industry Corporation functions to manage auto industry.
January 26, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation was established.
In February, China’s auto industry federation changed its name to China Automobile Manufacturers Association. A Work Conference of National Automotive Industry was held in Beijing, to declare the establishment of China Automotive Industry Corporation.
November 20, the project to produce 150 thousand popular sedans jointly by FAWand Germany’s Volkswagen signed in Beijing.
December 20, a joint venture project to produce sedans signed by China second automotive works and French Citroen Corporation in Paris. The contract was for the first phase of the project with the goal of an annual output of 150,000 Class C common type sedans. The ultimate goal of the project was an annual output of 300,000 Class C and B class ordinary sedans.
In 1990, China’s auto output reached 509,000 units, topping 500,000.
1991

February 8, FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd., mainly produced popular international advanced level Fastback Golf and Hatchback Jetta sedan, was established with an investment of 4.2 billion Yuan. The investment ratio of FAWand the German Volkswagen was 6 to 4.
December 5, the first Jetta sedan of FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Corporation went off the assembly line.
1992
July 15, at the 39th anniversary of China first automotive manufacturing plant, China First Automobile Group, a trans-regional, inter-departmental consortium of enterprises of different ownership forms and its core corporation, China First Automobile Group Corporation were established.
April 20, Santana 2000, jointly designed and developed by Germany’s Volkswagen and Shanghai Volkswagen went off the assembly line. The second plant of Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Plant finished construction.
June 8, Sino-Japanese joint venture Changan Suzuki Automobile Co., Ltd. was established.
In August, the first batch of Fukang cars Dongfeng Automobile Corporation went off the assembly line.
In September, China second automotive works renamed “Dongfeng Automobile Corporation”.
In 1992, China’s auto production reached 1.062 million, topping 1 million.
1993
In March, the cumulative production of Nanjing Automobile Manufacturing Plant reached 500,000 vehicles.
In April, China and Japan landed a contract to produce Changan Alto sedan jointly. The new JV was named Chongqing Changan Suzuki Automobile Co.,
1994
In February, Dongfeng Automobile Corporation launched a way of purchasing cars by installment.
In July, State Council issued the Automotive Industry Policy.
In September, Government guiding prices was introduced to domestic cars.
In 1994, China’s auto output reached 1.353 million.
1995
In February, 100 Audi and 300 Jetta sedans were exported to Southeast Asia firstly.
May 18, Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation Group and its controlling corporation were established. The Group had a total of 172 member units, 35 of which form its controlling corporation.
May 26, China’s first frontal crash test conducted by Huang Shilin, a professor of Tsinghua University Automobile Research Institute authorized by Beijing Jeep Corporation succeed.
November 23, Southeast (Fujian) Automotive Industry Co., Ltd. obtained the approval certificate and business license and was formally established in Fuzhou, becoming the largest ever cross-strait auto JVs. The establishment of S Southeast (Fujian) Automotive Industry Co., Ltd encouraged dozens of auto parts enterprises in Taiwan to invest for factories in the mainland.
